Problems Keeping Your Lawn In Good Condition? Replace It With Sod

Jose Wheeler

If you continually have problems with your lawn looking bad, this can get very frustrating. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to have a lush and beautiful lawn. One of these things is installing sod instead of grass. Below is information about what sod is and how it is installed.

Sod

Sod is real grass and comes in different types. The grass is grown and then harvested so that it can then be transplanted. When the grass has grown and is ready to be harvested, it is taken with the layer of soil underneath the grass, along with the root system. It is then ready to place on your lawn.

When the sod arrives at your home it will be in rolls making it easy to lay and cut as needed. One big benefit of choosing sod over replanting your lawn with grass feed is you will have an instant lawn. You will not have to look at bare soil waiting for grass seed to grow, which can take time.

Sod Installation

You should hire a contractor to install your sod for you to ensure it is done correctly. To do the installation, they first have to remove all the current grass on your lawn, as well as sticks, rocks, and other debris. When they're finished, they are left with bare soil. If you have an irrigation system buried, they will ensure the system will still work well once the new sod is placed.

The contractor may choose to mix in nutrients with the soil before they lay the sod. Organic matter is often used to improve the aeration and help the soil retain water much better. Fertilizer will then be tilled into the soil.

The contractor will then rake the soil to even everything out. They use a hand rake to do this or if you have a large yard a mechanical rake may be used. If there are low spots on your lawn they will be evened out.

There will be measurements done so the contractor knows the right lengths and widths to cut the sod as they unroll it. They will then install the sod making sure there are no overlaps, and the sod is completely even. When they are finished installing, they use a lawn roller over the sod. This helps the sod connect firmly to the soil. This is a very important part of the installation process.

A sod installation company like Bayside Sod Inc. can give you much more information on how they install sod on your lawn.

About Me
Technology Makes Landscaping Easier Than Ever

When I was young, I loved helping my mother in the garden. Our yard was filled with plants and flowers that she kept in immaculate condition. Once I was an adult and bought my first home, I learned that there was much more to landscaping a yard than I ever imagined! After a little trial and error planting a few flowers in my yard that died quickly, I realized the technology that is available to aspiring gardeners makes trial and error a thing of the past. After I found out what my "hardiness zone" was, I realized I was planting flowers made for much cooler climates, and I played around with software that let me design my yard very easily! I learned a lot throughout the experience, so I thought I would share my tips with everyone who needs them. Come back often to check out my new tips!
